ENGLISH MINI WEEK: WORTHING

HALLOWEEN 2013 at Ramón y Cajal.

HOW HAVE WE CELEBRATED HALLOWEEN AT RAMÓN Y CAJAL?

The bilingual groups have been working on different projects for two weeks to decorate the hall, the corridors and the main doors on the ground floor.
All the students were interested in the works of art they were doing and they say it was a great fun.
The results were excellent. You just have to look at the photos. Really great!!!
We try hard to innovate and be original every year.

This year the students have done the following:
• Horror stories invented by students. They are the characters of the stories.
• Origami owls with their symbolism in different cultures.
• Coffins made from shoe boxes and especially decorated.
• A graveyard with many tombstones and the epitaphs on them.
• Drawings that represent the typical scenery of this dark night, as haunted houses. bats and vampires.
• Drawings of funny costumes for Halloween night and their descriptions.
• A huge witch made with cardboard.
• Covers of horror books and films.
• Human skeletons.
• Masks, pumpkins (this year with scientific explanations), garlands… and many other things.

And once it was the exhibition ready, 31st October arrived. Some bilingual students dressed up and their teachers wore Halloween hats. You can see the groups with their English teachers in the photos.

EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES (26th SEPTEMBER)

The first piece of work proposed to the bilingual groups in the present academic year has been to celebrate the EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES. It took place on 26th September.

The bilingual students of 1st and 3rd of ESO, with their Art teacher's help, made up two big coloured maps where we can see the names of the countries that make up the European Union and their appropiate flags. All the students of each goup participated and the two pieces of work are really excellent.
The bilingual students of 2nd and 4th of ESO were asked to draw a map of Europe and highlight the countries that belong to the EU (28, with the last entrance in July). To start with, all the countries had to have their names written in English. Then, as the aim of the whole project is to investigate about the great number of languages that are spoken in the EU, they had to choose basic words like "hello", "welcome", "bye" or  alike and translate them into the different languages. Once they had the same word/s in all the languages they had to link them to their suitable countries. To end up and get the best result, the students could use their imagination, so the links were done in different ways: colours of flags, thin sticks, threat, plastic bugles, bubbles, etc.
Some students did it quite well, especially considering that they had only a week to make the project.

We can see some pictures of the exhibition at the school hall.

TALKING ABOUT THEMSELVES - 3rd ESO bilingual students

Along this year the 3rd of ESO bilingual students have been exchanging letters with a group of Greek students. To finish with the activities of the year, we thought about recording a video and this also would be a nice response to theirs.  We consider it is an excellent way of "meeting each other" and all the Spanish students were delighted with the idea.

We hope their Greek penpals like it.

CHRIS'S FAREWELL

Thursday, 30th May, was the last day at school of our language assistant, Christopher Overluizen. He has spent the whole academic year with us and specially with the bilingual groups, and the students wanted to show their gratitude. They have prepared a special party and there were some nice details that they have organized for him. Two groups signed their names on Spanish flags and wrote affective notes. The 3rd group gave him a picture with its frame. That picture was taken the week before in one of the lessons and Chris couldn't imagine the aim of that photo. Apart from bringing some food and drinks, the 1st of ESO group brought a big cake of "Bob Esponja" with the note "BYE CHRIS"

Also some students did some practical work about paper recycling in our school -IES Ramón y Cajal.

These are some of the presentations:

ST. VALENTINE'S DAY AT RyC

The bilingual groups have made some drawings to celebrate St. Valentine's day at school. Their teachers encouraged them to create art related to this special day. We try to make them see this day firstly, as a day of friendship, but also if you have a loved one is a perfect day to say "I love you" "I need you" or "You're my Valentine" among other love messages.

Apart from hanging all the students' works in the hall columns, in their English lessons they learnt about the origin of St Valentine. He was a priest who was executed for marrying couples secretly. Chris, our language assistant, showed them a ppt and made them talk about the customs and traditions that people have in Murcia.

Here I'd like to share with you Chris' presentation about St. Valentine's Day.

PENPAL LETTERS & THE 3rd BILINGUAL STUDENTS

The 3rd of ESO bilingual students are in correspondence with a Greek High School. It's called "Distomo High School (Gymnasio) and it is located in Distomo, Voiotia. Our students wrote their introduction letters and they were sent before Xmas. Now we have received their penpal letters and we've stuck them on one of the walls of an English classroom.

Here we can see pictures of the penpal letters of the Greek students and the Spanish group of students. The penpal names are written above the letters.

Have a look at them!
