CALBLANQUE AND CABO DE PALOS

Did you have fun at the same time you learnt a lot about the Mediterranean landscape, its flora and fauna? That was the purpose of the trip on 26 th of May.
We did an out-door activity and a bilingual guide went with us to Calblanque and Cabo de Palos. In this activity we dealt with contents related to different subjects, such as geography and history (Mediterranean landscape) natural sciences (Mediterranean flora and fauna) and English (using this language as a communicative tool).
First of all, we went around Calblanque. This Regional Nature Park is only a few kilometres from the Mar Menor, located in the Eastern side of Cartagena, on the Murcian coast.
There we consolidated what we have learnt in this academic year about Mediterranean landscape, such as dry areas, where high temperatures and droughts are very common due to the lack of rain in summer.  As a result, we verify that flora and fauna are adapted to these climatic characteristics: the vegetation in Calblanque is mainly composed by a wide variety of bushes (such as Lechuga de Mar or Siempreviva) and palm trees.

Moreover, it has wonderful beaches where we can enjoy the fossilized dunes and cliffs. The most representative beaches are Las Cañas, Negrete and Playa Larga.
Last but not least, the human activity is still present in this hidden treasure, like the agriculture and cattle-raising.

Secondly, after a break enjoying the beaches of Calblanque, we went to Cabo de Palos. This is a small, but charming fishing town located in a geographical accident called “Cape”. We visited the lighthouse, which was built in 1864.
Finally, we enjoyed unforgettable views of La Manga and the nearby islands, such as Isla Hormiga and Isla Grosa.

COLORADO STATE ON STEPHANIE'S HONOR

MANY THANKS, STEPHANIE

The students and teachers of the bilingual group 1º ESO want to thank you sincerely for your colaboration, affection and patience. All the days that you have spent with us during this year, we have learnt something new and always with a smile.

Lately we've been thinking about doing something that could remind us of your stay at the school. Although we could have prepared something more special, at the end we have downloaded a video about Colorado, the state where you come from. Trying to choose one that we like, we've learnt a little about this state in the USA. In it we can see the highlights, the flora, the wildlife and the most important traditions there. In the presentation, which is really marvellous, we can admire beautiful scenery and pictures of the most important cities, like Colorado Springs and Denver.

THE RICOTE VALLEY ROUTE

View from the valley

The Ricote Valley is situated in the fertile plain of the river Segura. It was the last Moorish stronghold in eastern Spain.

After the fall of Granada in 1492, the Mudéjares continued cultivating the land, in the same way that their ancestors had for centuries before, and they remained there until their expulsion in 1618.

The valley has an appearance of an oasis more than a plain.

The Moorish valley draws together a group of municipalities that run alongside the river Segura from the Contraparada dam in Alcantarilla in the south to the northern limits of Cieza.

The towns of Abarán, Blanca, Ricote, Ojós, Villanueva del Segura and Ulea all lie alongside the river.

The region has an average yearly temperature of 17 degree and the annual rainfall doesn't reach

above 250mm. This means the land is extremely dry and the vegetation will only grow on some parts of the mountanious countryside.

The valley is the land of fruit-bearing trees. Peaches, apricots and plums are the regio's main products. Grapes, oranges and lemons and all sorts of vegetables are also produced, all from the orchard.

It's the only place in the region where traditional irrigation methods are still used. There are irrigation channels, waterwheels, watering cans and dams.

A walk along the Segura river. All, the students and the teachers, paid attention to the explanations given by the guide.

The Big Waterwheel

Here we can see the parts of a wheel: we learn how it works and how the water gets into the irrigation channels to be part of the cultivation process.
