ST. VALENTINE'S DAY AT RyC

The bilingual groups have made some drawings to celebrate St. Valentine's day at school. Their teachers encouraged them to create art related to this special day. We try to make them see this day firstly, as a day of friendship, but also if you have a loved one is a perfect day to say "I love you" "I need you" or "You're my Valentine" among other love messages.

Apart from hanging all the students' works in the hall columns, in their English lessons they learnt about the origin of St Valentine. He was a priest who was executed for marrying couples secretly. Chris, our language assistant, showed them a ppt and made them talk about the customs and traditions that people have in Murcia.

PENPAL LETTERS & THE 3rd BILINGUAL STUDENTS

The 3rd of ESO bilingual students are in correspondence with a Greek High School. It's called "Distomo High School (Gymnasio) and it is located in Distomo, Voiotia. Our students wrote their introduction letters and they were sent before Xmas. Now we have received their penpal letters and we've stuck them on one of the walls of an English classroom.

OUR PERFORMANCE OF THE XMAS CAROL AT THE ART AND DRAMA HIGH SCHOOL

On the 13th of December the bilingual class of 2ESO participated in a regional singing festival! In the morning the kids walked to the Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático to perform an item they had been preparing several weeks before hand. The singing festival involved various schools from the region of Murcia including some from the centre and some from Cartagena. Our students not only sang but danced to the song ‘White Christmas’. The item was a big success and lots of fun was had by all!

To end up our participation in the Contest, their English teacher, M. Loreto García  and one of the students, Paula Gómez,got onto the stage to pick up the diploma of the School participation in the event. We see this moment on these photos:

SCHOOL TRIP TO CEMACAM

The three bilingual groups have gone on 14th November to Sangonera to the Environmental Centre called CEMACAM.


As everybody can see through the pictures we participated in three different activities:
The first one: A lecture guided by Antonio Soler that presented the renewable energies that we use and the electricity, gas or coal consumption nowadays.
For the other two activities the students were separated into two groups:
One group went for a walk along the centre to see the surroundings of the place and listened to the explanation of why the centre was built on that location. We met young people that were living there as they were doing environmental courses, Also we saw the model of the Centre and lastly we went to see the building where all the bedrooms are.
Meanwhile the other group gathered around a big table and the guide showed them different devices that work with tiny solar panels, for example a helicopter, cars, meccanos, a fan in a cap, a gull, etc. And something very strange for us - a solar cooker. It wasn't a perfect sunny day but we got some sun rays, therefore we saw how popcorns were made.

HOW HAVE WE CELEBRATED HALLOWEEN AT SCHOOL?

These were the arrangement: For two weeks the three bilingual groups and 4th ESO A have been working on different projects to decorate the hall, the corridors and the main doors on the ground floor.

All the students were interested in the works of art they were doing as this festivity is relatively new and they say it’s a great fun.

The results were excellent. You just have to look at the photos. Really fantastic!!!

If we pay attention we can see different parts of the exhibition:
• two graveyards with many tombstones and the epitaphs on them.

• black silhouettes that represent typical animals and things of the day: black cats, owls, bats, pumpkins, ghosts and witches,

• drawings that represent the typical scenery of this dark night, such as haunted houses and ghosts,

• two big ghosts filled with little ones and tombstones that contain sentences of this time of ghosts and terror,

• the covers of horror books and films,

• a human skeleton,
• a coffin,

• masks, pumpkins … and many other things.

And once the exhibition was ready, the 31st of October arrived. Most of the students dressed up and so did some of their teachers. You can see the disguises in the photos. Aren’t they fantastic?

And to celebrate Halloween, we all went to the school´s biggest room to participate in the activities prepared: power point presentations, conversations, and the reading of a ghost story: The White Lady. To finish with, we watched a film with subtitles “Little Red Riding Hood”

As you see we lived Halloween intensly. And you?

BILINGUAL STUDENTS AT THE SCIENCE & WATER MUSEM

La mañana del día 11de Octubre fue muy enriquecedora para un grupo de alumnos bilingües del IES Ramón y Cajal. Junto con dos de sus profesoras- de inglés y CCNN- los dos grupos de alumnos hicieron un recorrido por las distintas instalaciones del Museo.


Empezamos por EL PLANETARIO, y desde el mismo principio, situados en fila de uno para entrar, esto prometía. Dentro pudimos disfrutar de la simulación del cielo nocturno en Murcia con sus estrellas. Después nos maravillamos de poder ver la luna, el sol y los planetas, seguido por las constelaciones y la vía láctea. Fue realmente emocionante los viajes virtuales que hicimos por el Universo…. ¡¡¡ Nos creímos astronautas por un rato!!! Y no queremos olvidarnos de la magnífica exposición del monitor, que nos lo contaba todo en inglés.

En un estado de gran optimismo abandonamos el Planetario y tuvimos un pequeño descanso.

De nuevo entramos y nos dirigimos a la exposición itinerante: “LA ENERGÍA NOS MUEVE” A través de paneles de gran formato descubrimos las distintas energías y las alternativas para una electricidad y un transporte más limpios. Y lo divertido de esta exposición para los chicos/as vino cuando pudieron experimentar presionando los botones de distintos expositores lo que consumen las distintas bombillas o al ver moverse los coches con batería solar.

Y nos tocó terminar con la exposición de la SALA DEL AGUA. Aquí dos experimentos nos llamaron tremendamente la atención. El primero tenía que ver con la presión hidrostática y concretamente la Ley de Boyle que nos dice que el volumen de cualquier gas varía inversamente con la presión ejercida sobre él. El experimento con dos botellas de agua pegadas por el tapón, a las que se le habían hecho pequeños orificios y donde una estaba casi llena de agua y otra de aire, resultó todo un éxito cuando veíamos como al girar las botellas pasaba el agua de una a la otra formando un remolino tipo tornado al intercambiarse el aire por el agua. Y el segundo experimento que nos sorprendió fue como un chorro de agua que salía de un panel se convertía a nuestros ojos en una multitud de gotas gracias a la luz estroboscópica que crea impactos luminosos intermitentes. Los alumnos decían que era como cuando bailas en una disco que parece que te mueves en fotogramas.

Fue una jornada inolvidable y después de esta intensa mañana, llega la pregunta del millón al tener que regresar a las aulas….Profes ¿Cuándo vamos a repetir la experiencia? ¡¡¡Nos lo hemos pasado genial!!!

CLIL EXPERIENCE IN LONDON

This summer, the natural science teacher Fca. Elena Torrecillas had the opportunity to go to London for 15 days and assist to an excellent CLIL course in ADC College (Harrow-LONDON). She was given a Comenius Grant from the European Union.

 

But what is CLIL?  CLIL means  Content and Language Integrated Learning. (In Spanish, AICLE  or Aprendizaje Integrado de Contenidos y Lenguas Extranjeras, se aprende una lengua, en nuestro caso el inglés además de una asignatura). CLIL refers to situations where subjects, or parts of subjects (history, natural science,..) are taught through a foreign language with dual-focussed aims, namely the learning of content, and the simultaneous learning of a foreign language'. (Marsh, 1994). This is what teachers (DNL) do in a bilingual class.

Me gustaría dar las gracias a la APEE (agencia española de la Unión Europea) por haberme concedido esta beca para realizar un curso muy interesante y que me ha servido para renovar el método de enseñanza bilingüe, aprendiendo nuevas posibilidades para poner en práctica en las clases bilingües. También dar las gracias al director del IES, Jose María por su autorización para la realización del curso además de a mi familia por su paciencia.

Quisiera también dar la bienvenida a todos los estudiantes a este nuevo curso, tanto a los que ya me conocen como a los nuevos que empiezan en 1º de ESO bilingüe. Os animo a todos a participar intensamente en el Programa Bilingüe. Hasta muy pronto.
